The current structure of the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista in San Giovanni Valdarno does not correspond to its original form: in the fourteenth century, in fact, the latter had a single room plan without aisles. The interior showed a wooden truss roof and the facade was a hut with a window with pointed arches. The portico, with three arches on Tuscan columns, and the bell tower present in its current form were added later in the sixteenth century following some works of expansion and enrichment of the building.
In the second half of the eighteenth century, the church was completely abandoned and there was no intervention until 1884, the year that marked the beginning of a series of changes to the church completed around the first half of the twentieth century. Among the additional elements there are four coats of arms within garlands, symbols of the families who contributed to the costs of restoration and placed above the porch. The window on the facade was also modified: it was transformed into an opening similar to a rose window.
Following a recent restoration, frescoes have been found placed above the altars still present, dating back to the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. From the high altar comes the Polyptych of Mariotto di Nardo currently preserved in the Museum of the Basilica.
