The Church of San Lorenzo a San Giovanni Valdarno, dependent on the Pieve di Cavriglia, already existed at the foundation of Castel San Giovanni.
After being incorporated into the castle, the church has been frescoed and modified several times, losing its original Romanesque appearance, and restored from the mid-nineteenth century. Today it appears compact and simple, with a facade in sandstone and brick, and an interior with a large nave and a smaller nave divided by four arches.
In 1780 the remains of a "walled man" were found in a pillar of the church: it is a corpse positioned vertically in the wall, whose identity is unknown. Some speculate it might be Masaccio, but this theory is unlikely. It is certain that the man was buried after his death, and today the mummy is visible in a niche next to the column where it was found, protected by a small wooden door.
