Giovanni di Ser Giovanni di Mone Cassai, also known as lo Scheggia, was the younger brother of Masaccio.
Despite having a longer career, his fame never reached that of his famous brother.
Lo Scheggia also dedicated himself to creating birth disks, and he himself crafted the birth disk of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Probably arriving in Florence with Masaccio in 1417, lo Scheggia began as an apprentice in the workshop of Bicci di Lorenzo, working also with Andrea di Giusto and Stefano d’Antonio Vanni. Only in 1429, after the premature death of his brother, did he open his own workshop. In his hometown, San Giovanni Valdarno, lo Scheggia frescoed the Church of San Lorenzo. In addition, he created some altarpieces, including two panels attributed to him: a Choir with Singing Angels and a Madonna with Child, preserved in the museum of the Basilica of San Giovanni. Lo Scheggia worked diligently until his death in 1486 in Florence, where he was buried in the Church of Santa Croce.
